Tracking Technology Integrated into Soccer TV Coverage

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/134974

TAGS: Football and Soccer

Last week ESPN experimented with some new tracking and statistics technology during their coverage of the MLS Cup.  The system gives the viewers new insight on player movement throughout the game.  Stats like distance traveled, speed, and player spacing can all be easily delivered to the home audience.

With soccer gaining more momentum as a spectator sport in the US it seems ESPN is ready to capitalize on their coverage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.  It will be interesting to see how this affects viewership and how it could be implemented as a quantitative tool for player evaluation.

Munin Sports develop the XL frame

http://www.muninsports.com/

The brand new m-station from Munin Sports in Copenhagen is the best rebound technology that I have seen on the market to date. Allowing the user to practice numerous football drills individually or with a group, I reckon this technology will do well in the future.

Its technical specification is:

Height 270cm.
Width   270cm.
Depth 300 cm.
Weight app. 50 kilos

The strings are manufactured to give an explosive rebound and a very high strength.

The aluminum construction is light weight, easy to handle and wont rust.

All parts can be replaced.

The tires are filled with foam and wont puncture.

The video is definately worth a watch to see the versatility of the product.

Inmotio training at the next level

The importance for soccer coaches to analyse and assess the performance of their players is now greater than ever. With rewards for success and costs of failure so great in the global game, top clubs are quickly realising that the smallest of details can have a genuine and tangible impact on the entire success of a team.

Successful teams not only have a good tactical basis, they are characterised by excellent physical strength and power. For instance, many of the matches in EURO2008 were decided in the closing minutes. To consistently achieve top performance, these teams must be leaders in their sport, both tactically and physically.

With that in mind, computer-generated player tracking has, for a long time now, been an industry-wide system recognized and respected for its ability to create a digitally precise appraisal of a player’s strengths and weaknesses on the field of play.

Next step shall be the offering of a full service to the most important aspect of football preparation of all: training, says Edward de Boer, Managing Director of Dutch forward-thinkers ‘Inmotio’.

Inmotio’s revolutionary LPM Soccer 3D® Tracking system is already producing incredible results across the market, not only as a tool for measuring the true assessment of a player’s capabilities leading up to a game, but also as a detection facility against tweaks, strains and more severe football injuries, as Edward explains:

“We have pushed the boundaries of this technology in order to present a system that tracks, interprets and assesses training sessions. Though more than that, by adding a heart-rate monitor in real-time, we are the first system in the world to combine the very precise measurement of movement and heart rate”

“Given their busy football season, top football clubs cannot afford to train in a way that is not 100% effective for each session. In addition, coaches and players are aware more and more that individualisation is key in modern football training. We have produced an open and versatile system to which clubs can add and edit their own assessment criteria, so the training methods and the results that are gleaned from the sessions can now provide a strong foundation to the overall physical and tactical state of a player and/or team.”

The LPM software can measure the physical movement of players around a training field to an accuracy of ±5 cm, and boasts a sample rate of 1,000 Hz. The on-the-spot processing and return of results means that sessions can be altered at a second’s notice, allowing the flexibility necessary for the many demands contained within and around football today.

“Our general focus has been on the football market in Europe, and some of our biggest clients include PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan. If used correctly, the results for clubs – and at any level – can be astounding. Even taking the performance and tactical analysis benefits to one side, many are enjoying the obvious commercial and financial benefits to be taken out of the prevention of injuries. In addition clubs also recognize the benefits of improving the results of for instance their youth academies, like PSV Eindhoven is showing.”

The LPM system is traditionally operated by one person, though its popularity around clubs often means that both staff and players are keen to involve themselves in its workings and subsequent results. Often, for the first time our sportsmen can study in-depth analysis of not only their match performance but their training deliverance as well, and that in the form of 3D animation or as a fully connected and time-synchronized camera system. The system amongst others contributes to improving the players' physical performance; improving players' tactical insight; preventing injuries; developing more efficient training methods and creating a personal player profile.

“Here at Inmotio, we firmly believe that we are giving the football industry a new way of looking at tactical and fitness performance monitoring. We have a goal-orientated, user-friendly system that can be accessed in 2D or 3D, and from any point along the touchline or even on the field of play. To be able to get in and amongst players is a core necessity for any sport, and with the flexibility of the system any aspect of a player or a match can be recorded and interpreted.”

“This is undoubtedly where the future of sports training lies. We are actively spreading out our influence across other countries and in different sports areas, and it is my belief that in 2-3 year’s time this monitoring technique will be common-place, certainly in football, and most likely across all other active sports.
