The ultimate extreme sport - Space Diving!
As extreme sports get ever more exciting this one probably tops the bill! In an article published in New Scientist (20th October 2007), journalists examined the possibility of Space Diving (yes, diving from space!!) becoming the newest craze. However there were serious scientific principles underlining the article.
Over a number of years, experts have considered the possibility of space travel as a tourist trade. Mention of space stations has created excitement among the rich and famous who are clambering to be on the first space shuttle. With this in mind, scientists are beginning to prepare for this certain eventuality. Of course the risk of death is high. Of the 420 people who have reached space, around 22 people have died. Researchers at Space Biomedical Research Institute have started to develop safety equipment to reduce the chance of injury. One of the most appropriate methods of introducing and testing safety products to the mass market is through extreme sports. Common mechanisms used in the mass market car industry have been trialled by racing drivers in the past.
Orbital Outfitters and Space Diver are pioneering the new extreme sport of space diving to familiarise the public with equipment and the feeling of space travel. As yet, there have been no “high-high” altitude jumps (circa 100km high) however it is expected that the first of which will be in 2009.
The work of Space Biomedical Research Institute, Orbital Outfitters and Space Diver is extremely interesting and deserves further investigation www.orbitaloutfitters.com.
